Rhubarb ‘Timperley Early’

This is an old variety of Rhubarb and still the best, the stems are thick and deep red at the base, fading to light green with red flecks. The succulent flesh is light green and well-flavoured, and holds together when cooked, it is harvested during March and April.

Rhubarb is a hungry plant and, to get the best from them, they need to be grown in a bed which has layers of well-rotted manure. They will grow in a cold location as long as the soil doesn’t dry out and they get lots of sun, it can be forced in winter to get an early crop, however this tends to weaken the plant if it is a continuous process.
